The Gulmarg Gondola is one of Asia's highest and longest cable car systems, located in the resort town of Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir. It is a two-stage ropeway that transports tourists and skiers to breathtaking altitudes in the Pir Panjal mountain range.
The two main phases of the ride
Phase 1: Gulmarg to Kongdoori Station
Altitude: Rises from the Gulmarg resort station at 2,600 m (8,530 ft) to Kongdoori Station in the Kongdoori Valley.
Ride duration: About 9 to 15 minutes.
Scenery: Offers panoramic views of the lush green meadows and dense alpine forests.
Activities: At Kongdoori, visitors can enjoy various activities depending on the season, such as skiing, snowboarding, and snow biking in winter, or trekking and horse riding in summer.
Phase 2: Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak
Altitude: Ascends from Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak, reaching a height of 3,980 m (13,058 ft).
Ride duration: Approximately 12 to 20 minutes.
Scenery: Provides awe-inspiring views of the snow-covered Himalayan peaks, including a distant view of Nanga Parbat.
Activities: This phase is popular with adventure enthusiasts for its advanced skiing and snowboarding slopes. During summer, visitors can hike to the nearby Alpather Lake.
Additional chairlift (Phase 3)
An optional third phase was added in 2011, featuring a chairlift that connects Kongdoori to Mary's Shoulder, a popular spot for skiing competitions.
Visitor information
Tickets: Booking online in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak seasons, as there are no offline ticket counters in Gulmarg. This helps avoid long queues and scams. You can book tickets for each phase individually or for both phases combined.
Operating hours: Typically from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM in summer, but timings are highly dependent on weather conditions and can be subject to change. The last ride for the upper phases is earlier.
Things to know:
Health: Visitors, especially the elderly and children, should be aware of the possibility of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) at Phase 2 due to the high altitude. Carrying a supplemental oxygen canister is advised.
Weather: Operations can be temporarily halted during bad weather, such as heavy snow, rain, or high winds.
What to wear: Dress warmly, particularly when traveling to Phase 2, as temperatures can drop significantly.
