Alternate Picking is a guitar playing technique, necessarily used by pick-users, that employs strictly alternating downward and upward picking strokes in a continuous run. It is the most common method of plectrum playing. Alternate Picking can be heard in almost all styles of picked music, from Jazz to Bluegrass, to Heavy Metal.
There are three steps to learning alternate picking.
1. You need to develop good picking accuracy.
2. You need to work on syncing both hands with good coordination.
3. You should work on building up your speed.

When learning a new song or trying to play a solo guitar, first you should listen to the guitar solo you are trying to learn. Break the solo down into smaller sections and work on each section separately at a slow and comfortable tempo. Start combining the sections together
and then play the entire solo at a slow tempo. Start to work on playing the solo up to speed. Remember, is generally a good idea to practice it very slowly at first. Practicing at different tempos is key to mastering the techniques needed to play the solo or song.
Practice with a metronome: This can help you hear the beat and stay more aligned with it.
Focus on breathing: Maintaining a steady breath can help keep your internal tempo steady.
Gradually increase tempo: Start slow and gradually increase the tempo as you become more comfortable.
Practicing alone with a metronome can usually be pretty boring, but it's very important to improve your skills as a player.
