If we choose to truly seek after Christ, we WILL have our cross to bear. With this, many times we try to shy away from the cross or the suffering.

First, we must remember Christ called us to bear our cross in Matthew 16:24 when He said “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” Christ says right after “What will a man give in exchange for his soul?”

The Cross is participation with Christ and we can choose to be grateful for it. Remember, Christ carried His cross for us and His cross was immensely heavier than any of ours. With this in mind, we should tolerate everything without complaining and choose to be grateful for the cross and whatever suffering that means.

The cross, with the right mentality and heart, can refine us. Through bearing the cross and bearing it well, humility will grow. Trust in God will grow. And love for God and others will grow.

If we have true faith in “Lord, let your will be done” then we can approach whatever comes knowing it’s profitable for our soul. We will be grateful for the cross and bear it well. When we have a true “Jesus take the wheel” mentality, the cross truly can feel lighter even if the suffering is tangible physically and mentally. As Christ said, “My yoke is easy and my burden is light.” With full faith and trust in God, we can bear the cross with Christ and know that the cross is profitable for our souls.

Let’s strive to bear our cross well and to bear it with gratitude and love. By doing this, we can grow in humility, we can experience more grace from God, and learn to love God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength and love others as ourselves.
