Lepenski Vir, one of the most significant and oldest prehistoric sites in Europe, reveals traces of human presence dating back as far as 11,000 years, while the culture itself flourished around 8,000 years ago. Older than the Egyptian pyramids and Stonehenge, this community already had distinctive architecture, developed art, and a complex social structure. Located on the banks of the Danube in the Iron Gates Gorge, Lepenski Vir is famous for its trapezoid-shaped houses with central hearths and for its remarkable stone sculptures combining human and fish motifs, testifying to a rich spiritual life and a deep connection with nature.
Across the Danube from Lepenski Vir rises Mount Treskovac. Its position held special significance for the settlement’s inhabitants. Researchers believe that the people of Lepenski Vir observed the movement of the Sun in relation to the silhouette of Treskovac to determine the time of year, using the natural landscape as a calendar. When the Sun reached a specific point on the ridge, it marked a change in the annual cycle — the time for new activities, fishing, or rituals.
The inhabitants of Lepenski Vir lived in a harmoniously organized settlement, where houses were arranged according to a pre-established plan. The Danube was their main source of food, especially fish, while the surrounding forests and mountains provided game, edible plants, and materials for making tools. They practiced fishing, hunting, and gathering, and are believed to have known early methods of working stone and bone. Their art and architecture point to a developed social life, rituals, and beliefs, while the sculptures and layout of the houses reflect a connection to natural cycles and celestial observation.
A visit to the Lepenski Vir Museum offers the opportunity to see original sculptures, reconstructed houses, and archaeological finds that tell the story of one of the world’s oldest human civilizations. The museum is outstanding, providing a unique chance to view the site (the original location was 200 meters downstream), along with displayed sculptures and reconstructions. Visitors can attend fascinating expert lectures, and a special highlight is the advanced digital 3D reconstruction of a Lepenski Vir inhabitant, offering a captivating glimpse into how these people looked thousands of years ago.
A recommendation and an invitation to explore the rich culture and heritage of people who lived in harmony with the river, the mountains, and the Sun.
