What fascinates me about this place is why, on such a remote mountain, there’s both a giant Buddha statue and an old temple. What do people in rural China really believe, and why?
Amid the rugged mountains of eastern Sichuan, simple and quiet villages are scattered everywhere. Centuries ago, during times of turmoil, these mountains became hidden strongholds for rebel forces. War and chaos pushed people deeper into the mountains.
Taiping Village was one such place.
It also served as an altar for the White Lotus Society. Xu Tiande, one of its leaders, once rallied followers here to fight against Qing rule. Two hundred years later, it’s hard to imagine the bloody battles that took place, or that tens of thousands were buried in a mass grave atop the mountain.
The traces of that turbulent past are gone, and it’s not exactly a memorable history. Still, exploring this quiet village, with its old houses and rustic charm, is an experience worth having.
