Do You Need Backcountry Ski Poles?

Are backcountry ski poles worth the money? Is there really that big of a difference? There are lots of options when it comes to backcountry ski poles. My first pair were the Black Diamond Expedition. I bent them and the strap broke. I replaced them with a pair of fixed length Komperdell carbon poles I got for cheap. I broke them. I then turned to Black Crows and got a pair of Oxus fixed poles. And now I've purchased some Dynafit Speed Vario 2 poles because I wanted something that was adjustable. There's been other poles as well, whippets, race poles etc. I've learned that fixed poles are light, inexpensive, comfortable and reliable. However, sometimes, on big tours, having an adjustable ski pole is convenient. I've found over the years that there are 2 things all my backcountry ski poles must have, a strap and expended grip. I come from a skate skiing background and I need to loop that strap around my wrist in a way that allows me to just hang my arms and use a light grip when skinning. This is especially helpful on some of the local long approaches. I also need extended grip so my hands don't get cold from holding the pole at the top during traverses and kick turns on steep slopes.
