Irish Hereford Prime Farmer Members Geoffrey Brighten and his wife Celia farm in Rathkeale, Co. Limerick. They’ve been farming there for nineteen years, operating a calf-to-beef system, buying around 40 calves from local farmers each season.
The Brightens aim to eliminate fertilizer use by grazing their Hereford cattle on long grass, moving them regularly. Geoffrey believes this method prevents summer scour in calves and helps the grass self-nourish, with trampled forage returning nutrients to the soil. He moves the fence line twice a day to maintain this natural, sustainable cycle, only using fertilizer on silage fields and keeping cattle on mostly grass with minimal nuts for better health.
They prefer Herefords for their early maturity, ease of fleshing, and ability to thrive on a grass-based system. The farm also participates in Social Farming Ireland, allowing individuals to engage in farm work as part of their therapy. The Brightens have a poly tunnel and vegetable plot, where social farmers work on rainy days. Geoffrey values teaching sustainable farming, aiming to preserve fertile land for future generations.
