Books can be burned, banned, and branded dangerous, but the often unexpected and subversive ideas that they contain cannot be suppressed. Mridula Garg is a reputed and prolific Hindi writer and a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi award. Her novel Chittacobra was branded obscene and led to her arrest. Kalpana Raina is a patron of translation across diverse languages and has recently co-translated For Now It Is Night - stories by the late Hari Krishna Kaul. Former diplomat Navdeep Suri has translated the words of his grandfather Nanak Singh, whose poems, Khooni Vaisakhi and Zakhmi Dil had been banned and censored after Jallianwala Bagh and the Guru Ka Bagh Morcha. Merve Emre is the Shapiro-Silverberg Professor of Creative Writing and Criticism at Wesleyan University and the director of the Shapiro Center for Creative Writing and Criticism. Novelist and columnist Nilanjana S. Roy is the editor of Our Freedoms and has written extensively on free speech. In an important session, they speak of books that were suppressed and silenced, and how they survive obliteration and censorship.

Mridula Garg is proficient in both Hindi and English. She has written prolifically in Hindi, covering various genres, including 8 novels, 4 plays, 6 collections of essays, and 90 short stories. Additionally, she has authored 1 novel in English, titled The Last Email. Her most recent publication is a memoir titled VE NAYAAB AURTEIN, reflecting on her life experiences. Garg has earned several awards, including the 2004 Vyas Samman for her novel Kathgulab and the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2013 for Miljul Mann. She was also honoured with the Hellman-Hammett Grant by The Human Rights Watch, New York, in 2001. Her novel Chittacobra has been translated into English, French, Russian, and German. Miljul Mann is available in Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Rajasthani, and Malayalam. Kathgulab has been translated into Marathi, Malayalam, and Japanese. Anity is available in English and Marathi, and Main Aur Main in Odiya and Marathi. In 1990, she served as the keynote speaker at the UN Colloquium for Women at IOWA and worked as a Research Associate at UC Berkeley, USA.

Merve Emre is the Shapiro-Silverberg Professor of Creative Writing and Criticism at Wesleyan University and the director of the Shapiro Center for Creative Writing and Criticism. Her books include Paraliterary: The Making of Bad Readers in Postwar America, The Personality Brokers, The Ferrante Letters, and The Annotated Mrs. Dalloway. She has been awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize, the Robert B. Silvers Prize for Literary Criticism, and the Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing by the National Book Critics Circle. She is a contributing writer at the New Yorker.

Kalpana Raina was born in Kashmir and lives in New York. She is a senior executive with extensive financial, management and advisory experience internationally. Raina is currently the Vice Chair at Words Without Borders, a premier online journal of translations. Her collaborative translation project of stories from the Kashmiri language, For Now, It Is Night, is her first work of translation.

Navdeep Suri was India’s Ambassador to UAE, High Commissioner to Australia, Ambassador to Egypt and Consul General in Johannesburg. His acclaimed translations include his grandfather Nanak Singh’s novels, Pavitra Paapi as The Watchmaker and Adh Khidya Phul as A Life Incomplete. His recent work includes the searing Partition novels, Hymns in Blood and A Game of Fire and Khooni Vaisakhi – a long poem written by Nanak Singh in 1920 after surviving the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

Nilanjana S. Roy is the award-winning author of three novels, including The Wildings, and has edited three anthologies, including Our Freedoms. She writes a column on books and the reading life for the Financial Times. Her most recent novel, Black River, is her first work of crime fiction.
