Expedited Partner Therapy (EPT) is a public health strategy that allows healthcare providers to prescribe or provide medication to the sexual partners of individuals diagnosed with chlamydia or gonorrhea, without requiring the partner to undergo a medical examination.
How EPT Works
A patient diagnosed with an STI receives medication or a prescription for their partner(s).
The partner takes the medication without visiting a doctor.
This helps prevent reinfection and reduces STI transmission.
Benefits of EPT
Increases partner treatment rates.
Reduces reinfection risk for the diagnosed patient.
Prevents further spread of STIs in the community.
Overcomes barriers like lack of healthcare access or stigma.
Limitations & Considerations
Not available in all regions (laws vary by state or country).
Does not replace full medical evaluation (partners may have other STIs).
May not be suitable for all cases, especially if the partner has allergies or is pregnant.
