The Pembina River (pronounced pem-bee-nuh) is a scenic waterway known for its dramatic landscapes, most notably the deep sandstone gorges and high cliffs in central Alberta. The name comes from the Cree word pimbina, referring to the high bush cranberry that grows along its banks.

​Depending on which stretch you’re on, the Pembina is famous for a few distinct things:
​The Gorge: Near Entwistle and Evansburg (about an hour west of Edmonton), the river has carved a massive gorge with cliffs reaching up to 62 meters (200 feet) high.

​The "Tubing" Capital: Because the water is relatively shallow and slow-moving in the summer, it is one of the most popular spots in Western Canada for river tubing and floating.
​Geology: The river exposes ancient layers of the Paskapoo and Edmonton Formations, showing off 65-million-year-old sandstone and shale.

​The Wilderness: It flows through a mix of boreal forest and aspen parkland, providing a home to moose, deer, and bald eagles.
​Note: There is also a second Pembina River that runs through Southern Manitoba and North Dakota. That version is famous for the Pembina Gorge, a massive, unaltered wilderness area and the only "whitewater" river in North Dakota!
