Families have been visiting Mount Buffalo during winter for over a hundred years, with thousands of kids enjoying their first ever snow experience here. Snowplay, tobogganing, cross country skiing, winter walking, snowshoe rambles and more are on offer when the snow begins to fall.
Between late May and late September Mount Buffalo's high elevation means that winter rains often fall as snow, covering the plateau in a magical blanket of white gold that opens up new activities and adventures...
The Chalet and Gorge Precinct
Already captivating in the warmer months, The Chalet, its gardens and the Gorge Precinct are even more beautiful in the snow.
Dingo Dell
During winter Dingo Dell is an ideal place to experience snow for the first time ... or to return each year as a seasoned tobogganist for more long runs and speed thrills. Build a snowman, have a snowball fight, slide your way down the slopes, take a short walk through the snow to Dingo Dell Lookout, learn to cross country ski, or just relax and watch everyone else. The Dingo Dell Cafe and Visitor Centre offers warm shelter, toilets and hot snacks.
Cresta Valley
Cresta Valley's wide open spaces become a popular cross country skiing network of trails during winter. There's plenty of car parking, no trail fees and mountain entry is free. Hop in the car and drive the short distance back to Dingo Dell for a hot chocolate and snack, or just to warm up!
Snow Chains
During the declared snow season chains are required to drive up Mount Buffalo when:
either snow is forecast for under 1600 metres (the highest point on the roads is over 1550 metres),
or potentially hazardous snow or ice conditions exist on the road,
When neither of these conditions exist Parks Victoria may remove the requirement to carry chains.
