The 2019 HBO series Chernobyl made a huge error in its depiction of the billowing cloud of black smoke rising from the exposed reactor core following the massive explosion of the Chernobyl Reactor 4. But this mistake is understandable when looking at it through the lens of dramatic effect. But the reality of the situation was that the plant spit out thin, white smoke, barely visible for days, as shown by some of the first images taken from a helicopter by Igor Kostin on the same day of the disaster.
