This video looks at the process of headland erosion. As waves approach a headland (a hard piece of rock jutting out to sea) it goes through several stages during the marine process of erosion. First, small faults and areas of weakness in the headland turn into cracks. Over time, hydraulic action enlarges these cracks creating a cave. As waves refract and bend around the coastline, they continue eroding until an arch is formed. Erosion continues to attach the base of the arch and sub-aerial processes such as weathering attack the top of the arch. Over time, the arch collapses leaving a vertical column of rock that is detached from the headland - this is called a stack. Erosion and weathering continue until the stack is broken down and turned into a small rocky outcrop called a stump. To revise this process, keep repeating the stages out loud 'crack, cave, arch, stack, stump' - you can also use modelling clay to create a 2D or 3D model of headland erosion.
