The historical practice of garment caching—deliberately concealing clothing within architectural structures, offers an alternative lens for rethinking fashion, sustainability, materiality, and the built environment. Found across regions including the UK, Europe, North America, and Australia, this practice remains underexplored in academic discourse. Historically, we can speculate that caching fashion served as an abstract form of communication, preservation, and cultural storytelling, with concealed garments reflecting complex attitudes toward clothing, memory, architecture, protection and space.
This project revisits and reinterprets caching to provoke dialogue on intersections between fashion and space, challenging dominant narratives of historical fashion, waste, conservation, consumption, and identity while critiquing archival systems. How might these overlooked processes and untraditional archives reconnect us to sartorial narratives and materiality in meaningful and sustainable ways?
