Hangan Village Celebrates First-Ever Mini Cultural Show.
The inaugural Hangan Mini Cultural Show successfully kicked off on Thursday in Hangan village on Buka Island, despite heavy morning rain. Organized by local youth, the event aimed to promote cultural heritage and foster peace and unity as Bougainville prepares for the future.
The show was a three-day event, which concluded today.
Recognizing the decline of cultural practices in the Pacific due to Western influences, the youth sought to revive the values instilled by their forefathers. The show serves as a unifying marker for the community, bringing together members of the Tsitalato constituency, Buka Islanders, and Bougainvilleans.
Josephine Hagua, Chairlady of the Hangan Cultural Festival, acknowledged the challenges faced in organizing the event.
ABG Member for Tsitalato and Minister for Police, John Bosco Ragu, praised the initiative, emphasizing the importance of such events in preserving cultural traditions for future generations. He noted that this being the first village-initiated event of its kind during this season aligns with the true Christmas spirit, helping to steer youth away from destructive habits and instilling discipline and respect for their elders.
Minister Ragu expressed gratitude to the major sponsors, including Regional Member Peter Tsiamalili and Member for North Bougainville Francesca Semoso, for their support in upholding traditional cultures through this meaningful effort.
