I don't know if there's a way to turn around without dying first like on PC, so this is the best I can do for now.
BTW, another benefit of being able to skip cutscenes on PS2 is that this skip is more viable in full game runs since you don't have to rewatch the entire 2 minute intro cutscene or wait for the timer to reach 0 if you softlock doing the trick, that is, landing on the ceiling of the level instead of falling back into it.
I thought this trick was gonna be a lot tougher but it's not that bad, actually. So far, I've only softlocked once, and it was the first time I got past the tube while practicing.
