Amongst Gustavo Gutiérrez’s theological corpus, A Theology of Liberation (1971) and Las Casas: In Search of the Poor of Jesus Christ (1992) stand out as foundational contributions to Theology. In both books, Gutiérrez resorts to Thomas Aquinas’s thought to establish the epistemological status of theology as a second, reflexive act that arises from the first act of divine Love. In the latter book, the Peruvian theologian presents Las Casas reading of Aquinas as characterizing the mediation of the Indian other as God’s call, grounding the ethics of the option for the poor. Both axes will be explored in this lecture as we think about the actuality of Aquinas, Las Casas, and Gutierrez’s contributions in the present context of the “power of death," and "where the agency of the poor and the victims who resist violence, inspired by the divine Ruah, becomes a place of redemption.”
