The flat serve is one of the most powerful shots in tennis — but only if your timing, hand action, and leg drive work together. In today’s video, I walk you through my favorite flat-serve warmup exercise, where I demonstrate each step myself and show you slow-motion clips of my full serve so you can understand exactly how the motion should look and feel.
This drill focuses on just two essential elements:
1️⃣ Separating your hand from your shoulder so you can create a clean, powerful snap.
2️⃣ Teaching your legs to bend and lift to give you height — not power — so the ball can be hit from a better contact point.
You’ll learn:
✅ how to delay the acceleration,
✅ how to pronate,
✅ how to avoid muscling the ball with your shoulder, and
✅ how to time the jump with the snap for a truly explosive flat serve.
⛑️ What you’ll learn in this video:
🎾 Why most players accelerate way too early
🎾 How to “disconnect” the shoulder from the hand
🎾 How to pronate and strike the middle/back of the ball
🎾 How to use the legs for height, not power
🎾 How to feel the snap vs. the shoulder pull
🎾 How to delay acceleration until the perfect moment
🎾 Warmup progressions: near the net → service line → mid-court → baseline
🎾 How to keep your body over the ball for a clean downward strike
🎾 Real-time and slow-motion examples from different angles
🎾 How to train the correct intention so your timing becomes automatic
This is one of the most effective serve warmups you can do — and when practiced consistently, it transforms your flat serve into a reliable weapon.
