The majority of older adults in the US want to age in place. And there are many benefits to aging in place: social engagement, independence, and autonomy. Creating innovative ways for older adults to age in place is important, especially because our nation is aging at an unprecedented rate.
This session will explore successful typologies for aging in place with a specific focus on Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). Panelists will review three recently completed case study projects in Chicago that incorporate aging in place strategies. The conversation will cover the process and outcome of building an ADU while also sharing challenges inherent to these project types. Finally, participants will also learn how ADUs help expand access to affordable options for seniors to remain in their communities as they age.
