The maximum southern moon setting of this entire 18.6 year major lunar standstill cycle at Callanish (Calanais) on 22 March 2025 Stellarium SIMULATED 3D rendering. This is to be streamed in synchronization to the actual event on site as the weather report was for cloud cover. After the livestream the video can be can be watched back later on the YouTube channel.
Special thanks to Callanish Digital Design and Callanish3D for the inspiration and the 3D model.
Lunar Standstills change position over an 18.6 year cycle to reach Major Lunar Standstill when the moon reaches a maximum monthly range of moonrise/moonset to the north and south well beyond the range of the sun at solstices.
Major Lunar Standstill occurs every 18.6 years when the moon reaches a maximum monthly range of moonrise/moonset to the north and south well beyond the range of the sun at solstices. Through 2024 and 2025 the moon will swing back and forth between extreme northern and southern positions on the horizon and in the sky (from high in the sky to very low on the horizon) with reaching absolute maximums in March 2025. Since the cycle takes 18.6 years to complete, there are limited opportunities to make direct observations and to document maximum lunar positions at the myriad ancient sites that have possible connections that still exist to any extent. While the standstill has an absolute peak, it reaches extreme positions for about 2 years, but with some phases hard to observe in daylight and with any cloud interference, the possibilities are reduced. For observation/viewing purposes it ideal to take advantage of every opportunity over these years when conditions are right. The Archaeoastronomy Database has put together and shared information on dates for observation along with tips on how to find local rise/set times and to observe under the best circumstances.
