THE GUN RANGER stars Battling Bob Steele, a B western legend and a favorite of many a western actor who saw Bob on the silver screen when they were cowboy kids. Ya see, Bob was small, only 5’ 5”, yet he managed to always have terrific scuffles with much larger villains. Like perennial bad guy, husky Charles King. WORD’S WAYBACK takes us way back to 1936 for one of the last of Bob’s films he made directed by his father, Robert N. Bradbury, before signing with Republic Pictures.
THE GUN RANGER stars Bob as a frustrated lawman. Very frustrated because each time he brings in an outlaw the judge sets them free. When criminal Ernie Adams is freed on a technicality for the murder of Eleanor Stewart’s father, Bob is fed up and quits, deciding to act as vigilante, on his own. There are lots of twists in this story, unusual for a B western.
The cast is solid and filled with actors who constantly worked in the genre. Let’s start with Ernie Adams, usually a bumbling sidekick, cast as a villain. Budd Buster, with over 300 minor credits, teams up with Bob in this film. The usual bad guys John Merton and Earl Dwire are…bad guys. This was only the fourth film for Eleanor Stewart. She signed with Republic and went on to ride the range with an array of B western stars including Tex Ritter, Bob Custer, Robert Livingston, and Ken Maynard.
Of course, while mainly remembered as a western star Bob Steele did excellent work in several A movies like OF MICE AND MEN, THE BIG SLEEP and HANG ‘EM HIGH. Many of you will recall him as Private Duffy on the western comedy series F TROOP.
