A very rare 1972 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 takes on old school America muscle cars: 70 Buick GSX Stage 1; 1974 Pontiac SD-455 Trans Am; 1970 Hemi Road Runner and a 1969 L88 Corvette.


All of the muscle cars in the video are very rare and desired muscle cars. So, how so how does a 1972 Olds 442 W-30 stack some serious Detroit Muscle cars? Let's find out...



The Olds 442 W-30 started life in the 1960's as a blueprinted 400 cubic inch terror from the Olds division of GM to compete with the SS396 Chevelle. In 1970, the blueprinted W-30 grew to 455 cubic inches and was one of the most potent motors from Detroit. The car in the video is a 1972 W-30; however, don't let the 300 net horsepower rating fool you. Even in 1972, the W-30 was a blueprinted torque monster.


The first car to take on the W-30 is a 1970 Buick GSX Stage 1. The GSX is equipped with Buick's torquey 455 cubic inch Stage 1 engine (Stage 1 was essentially a blue printed motor from the factory and was Buick's answer to the Olds W-30). The Stage 1 was rated at 360 HP and 510 lb/ft of torque.

The next car to race the W-30 442 is a 1974 Trans Am equipped with Pontiac's 455 Super Duty Power plant. Even though this car was built in an era when smog rules were strangling horsepower, the Super Duty 455 was a force to be reckoned with and could hold it's own with muscle cars from the late 60's and 1970. The Trans Am in the video is equipped with an 455 SD motor conservatively rated at 290 horsepower.

The third car to race the W-30 442 is a 1970 Hemi Road Runner which is equipped with a dual quad 426 cubic inch Hemi rated at 425 horsepower. The 426 Hemi is a legendary motor with untold potential due the the hemispherical design of the combustion chambers.


The last car to race the W-30 is very rare 1969 L88 Corvette. The L88 was a race only option and a well kept secret. The Lengendary L88 was conservatively rated at 430 horsepower; however, most believe it made well over 500 hp.


All the cars in the video are competing in the Pure Stock Drags, so modifications are very limited. The only modifications permitted are minor porting, blue printing and minor weight reduction without altering the stock appearance. Camshafts and compression ratio have to be within a small percentage of stock specs. That means stock intake manifold, stock exhaust manifolds and street tires.
