"99 Red Balloons" Easy Beginner Guitar Lesson | Chords & Lyrics, Strumming + Leads/Melody

Hey everyone! In today's lesson I'm going to show you a simple way to play "99 Red Balloons" by Nena. This is a four-chord-wonder, meaning it's the same four chords over and over. I'm also going to show you how to play the instrumental riff in a really easy way.

The lesson begins with the chord shapes. We practice, each shape and I give you some switching tips to make the chord switching nice and smooth. Then we go through the chord progression, playing downstrokes only, just to make sure you're used to the switching before moving on and learning the strumming pattern.

We're going to use the most common strumming pattern ever for this one, which I go over in this tutorial here (   • This Strumming Pattern Works on Almost ANY...  ). We also take a moment during lesson to count it out and develop steady rhythm. We use the strumming pattern one time per chord shape and practice it together with the chord progression.

Next we learn the instrumental riff. We go through it note by note counting out to nail the rhythm. I also show you how to transition from the chords into the instrumental riff so that you can do it smoothly and so there are no hiccups when performing this tune.

Once we have the chords, strumming and lead parts completely down, we put it all together and play a shortened version of the song.
