Do Alocasia Grow Well In Pon | Look How My Metalheads Are Growing!
Hello and Welcome Back To The Plant Amateur!
Where We Learn As We Grow!
This pon–alocasia relationship is thriving, and honestly I’m obsessed. Even without drainage, this Metalhead pushed out gorgeous roots and kept growing all winter. I’m really excited to see what spring and summer bring.
I’ve always been confused by the whole “one leaf in, one leaf out” alocasia rule… so naturally, I put two plants in one pot to create the illusion of fullness and keep their “normal” growth pattern. Work smarter, not harder.
Alocasia “Not Sure If There’s a Latin Name”
AKA: Metalhead
Native to: Tropical & subtropical Asia + eastern Australia
These girls mound, they make corms, and apparently you can divide them too — something I’ll deep-dive into later.
Growth Rate: Slow–medium. She’s been putting out leaves, and her roots are going feral, but the leaf size hasn’t increased yet. I suspect a fertilizer issue… because clearly the problem is not me. HAHAHA.
Maintenance: Low–medium. Mercury lived in my cabinet until she settled in and pushed out several leaves. After her most recent pot-up, we finally acclimated her to “regular house life.”
Difficulty: Low. I personally get along great with alocasia (aside from the Azlanii, the drama queen). It’s only been a year and yes, I totally cheat with cabinets, but overall they stay pretty chill.
Toxicity: Like all Alocasia — absolutely, yes.
Plant Stats & History
She came to me via Facebook Marketplace in Oct 2023 as two tiny plants in separate 1-oz moss cups. I moved them into pon and they exploded — from that 1-oz cup to a 24-oz cup to… maybe too soon… a 1-gallon pot. 🙃
At their peak, they’ve given me six leaves at once, which is why I planted them together. One pot = easier plant chores, and plenty of space for both to grow into their future selves.
They lived in my cabinet until this most recent pot-up, and now they have a cozy spot on one of my shelves.
