스털링 엔진은 기체의 온도가 올라가면 부피가 커지고 내려가면 부피가 작아지는 원리를 이용하여 영국의 목사였던 로버트스털링이 발명하였다. 한쪽을 가열하여 부피를 팽창시키고, 다른 한쪽은 냉각시켜서 부피를 감소시키는 현상을 반복한다. 알코올램프의 열이 시험관안의 공기를 팽창시키면 반대쪽 실린더 내부 공기가 팽창하여 주사기가 올라가게 되어 기울어지게 된다. 공기에 의해 냉각된 주사기속의 공기가 수축하면 높이가 낮아져 원래의 위치로 가면 시험관 안의 구슬이 알코올램프 쪽으로 내려온다.

The Stirling engine was invented by Robert Stirling, a British pastor, using the principle of increasing the volume when the temperature of the gas rises and decreasing as the temperature rises. One side is heated to expand the volume, and the other side is cooled to reduce the volume. When the heat of the alcohol lamp expands the air inside the test tube, the air inside the opposite cylinder expands, causing the syringe to rise and tilt. When the air in the syringe cooled by the air contracts, the height decreases and the beads in the test tube come down to the alcohol lamp when they go to their original positions.
