The difference between intarsia and stranded colourwork

I sometimes find that people confuse intarsia with stranded colourwork.
In stranded colourwork, you carry the unused colour along the back side of the work, so you get strands (aka floats) on the wrong side.
In intarsia, you use a different ball or bobbin for each colour area, so there are no floats on the wrong side.
