Luther Vandross ( April 20, 1951 – July 1, 2005 ), made 2 public appearances at Diana Ross & The Supremes' “Return to Love Tour “ stop at its opening in Philadelphia at First Union Spectrum and its final stop at Madison Square Garden in 2000.
Luther hit the top ten again in 1994, teaming with Mariah Carey a cover version of Lionel Richie and Diana Ross's duet "ENDLESS LOVE" and, also a cover version of Diana Ross And The Supremes , “ REFLECTIONS” .
The covers were included on the album Songs (Luther Vandross album- 1994 ), a collection of songs which had inspired Vandross over the years .
Luther Vandross wrote, for Diana Ross, “ A BRAND NEW DAY “ ( included in the original soundtrack “ The Wiz “, 1978 ) and "IT'S HARD FOR ME TO SAY" included in her album “Red Hot Rhythm & Blues “ ( 1987 ).
Diana performed this latter “a cappella” as tribute to Oprah on her final season of “The Oprah Winfrey Show”( 2011 ). Diana Ross, then proceeded to add it to her successful 2010-112 "More Today Than Yesterday: The Greatest Hits Tour " for the first time since its 1987.
From “ LUTHER” , THE BIOGRAPHY of LUTHER VANDROSS :
"...He discovered another act to idolize, another love that stayed with him for life...a trio from Detroit.. a full-figured honey blonde named Florence..Mary (with ) her coy smile and late night gaze. Then there was the lead singer, Diana, the one you couldn't stop staring at...a smile that was ferocious in it's glee...Luther was enthralled by the sound of Diana's hungry coos gliding across the music's hammering beats. It sounded like confectioner's sugar sprinkled over a pound cake, on Ed Sullivan.....Whenever The Supremes were scheduled to appear, he planned to watch way in advance, drawing pictures of the group in his school notebooks in anticipation of hurrying himself to eat dinner and clean dishes before the show began...... "
