“মেয়েরাও আজকাল বিড়ি-সিগারেট খায়!” – মধ্যবিত্ত পরিবারের চোখে এটা এখনও ‘অস্বাভাবিক’।
তাই কোভিড-১৯ লকডাউনের সময়ে ছেলে বাইরে বেরোতে চাইলে মা ভাবেন – “ও বড় হয়েছে... হয়তো বিড়ি-সিগারেট কিনতে যাচ্ছে!”
কিন্তু মেয়ে একইভাবে বেরোতে চাইলে বাবা-মা দুশ্চিন্তায় আচ্ছন্ন – “মেয়ে বাইরে যাবে? কেন? কী প্রয়োজন? চারিদিকে সবকিছু বন্ধ! বাইরে গিয়ে কি করবে?”
অন্যদিকে, মেয়ের মনের অবস্থা ভাবুন –
ধূমপানের অভ্যেস, নেশার টান, লকডাউনে সিগারেট-বিড়ির অভাব, এবং ঘরের মধ্যেই লুকিয়ে থাকা লিঙ্গ বৈষম্য! সব মিলিয়ে বিরক্তি, রাগ, অসহায়তা – সবকিছুর চরম সীমায় পৌঁছে যায় সে।
কিভাবে সামলায় মেয়েটি লোকডাউনের সময়টাকে?
“ধূমপানের অপকারিতা (Smoking Blocks…)” – একদিকে একটি মেয়ের সমাজ, পরিবার, অভ্যেস আর অন্যদিকে দমবন্ধ করা মানসিকতা অবস্থার গল্প।

“Girls also smoke bidis and cigarettes these days!” — yet, in the eyes of a middle-class family, this is still considered “abnormal and not happily acceptable".
So during the COVID-19 lockdown, if the son wanted to step outside, the mother would assume, “He’s grown up now… maybe he’s going out to buy cigarettes or bidis!”
But if the daughter wanted to step out in the same way, the parents would be filled with anxiety —
“The daughter wants to go out? Why? For what? Everything is shut down! What will she even do outside?”
Now, think of the girl’s state of mind then —
The habit of smoking, the pull of addiction, the scarcity of cigarettes and bidis during the lockdown, and the hidden gender discrimination within her own household make her feel suffocated! All of it together pushes her frustration, anger, and helplessness to the absolute limit.
How does the girl cope with the lockdown?
“Smoking Blocks…” — a story of a girl caught between society, family, habits, and a suffocating mental environment.
