Colobostruma is a rare genus of ants found only in Australia, New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. An Australian scientist named them "Fierce Gremlin Ants" because of their alien-like appearance and fierce expression (probably referring to the unusual shape of their heads). These ants are very small and found in the forest litter or under rocks. Very little is known about their habits, although it is known that their mouthparts can form a lock that prevents preys escaping. They are currently placed in the subfamily Myrmicinae and in the tribe Attini with leaf-cutter ants, although they most likely feed on small preys such as springtails or from the honeydew of homopteran insects. The species presented here is likely Colobostruma elliotti.
