I’ve been wanting to make a loose tenon jig for a while, and I finally got around to building one! After searching for an easy-to-build and easy-to-use solution for cutting mortises, I found an inspiring design on YouTube and decided to create my own version—with a few upgrades.
For the cutting, I’m using my Makita trim router fitted with a 6mm upcut bit. The handheld setup is simple, accurate, and perfect for producing consistent mortises. I also took the opportunity to make my own tenons (or “dominos”) from shop scrap, giving them a second life in upcoming woodworking projects.
This jig is now one of my favorite shop-made tools—fast, accurate, and versatile for joinery work. If you’ve been thinking about building your own loose tenon jig, this project might give you some ideas!
Tools & Materials Used:
Makita Trim Router
6mm Upcut Router Bit
Scrap hardwood for tenons
