Raffaele Calace (1863-1934)
Elegia Op. 131 for mandolin and guitar
Eugenio Palumbo, mandolin
Roberto Guarnieri, guitar
Composed in memory of Ludovico Sangermano, a prominent Neapolitan sculptor who died in 1924, Elegia Op. 131 is one of Raffaele Calace’s most profound and emotionally charged works. The piece leads the listener through waves of grief and reflection, shaped by striking dynamic contrasts from whispering pianissimo (ppp) to forceful forte. A rare and notable feature is that Calace explicitly allows the piece to be performed on either mandolin or violin. This duality is reflected in the writing, which favors double stops over full chords, emphasizing melodic clarity and lyrical expressiveness. Dissonant harmonies heighten emotional tension, while frequent, expressive silences evoke the emptiness and stillness of death.
Elegia Op. 131 stands as both a deeply personal tribute and a poignant meditation on loss, resonating with timeless depth and sensitivity. It remains one of my favorite pieces by Calace a work through which I strive to connect deeply with the soul.
Recorded in « Recraft Studio », Palermo (Italy) on 2 February 2025
