His musical journey began under the tutelage of Ustad Dhyanesh Khan, the son of the legendary Maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan Sahib. Following Ustad Dhyanesh Khan's untimely demise, Sougata continued his training under the guidance of Ustad Aashish Khan, the elder brother of his first Guru. The influence of these esteemed musicians laid a strong foundation for Sougata's artistic development and shaped his unique musical style. One of the defining moments in Sougata's musical education came through his interactions with Maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan Sahib during the latter's annual visits to Kolkata. These invaluable lessons under the direct guidance of the Maestro himself enriched Sougata's understanding of the Sarod and deepened his connection to the classical music tradition. In his quest for musical excellence, Sougata sought further mentorship from Pandit Santosh Bandyopadhyay, a revered Sitar and Surbahar player known for his profound musical expertise. Over a span of more than 25 years, Sougata honed his craft under the watchful eye of this esteemed Guru in Kolkata, refining his technique and expanding his musical horizons. Currently, Sougata is privileged to be under the mentorship of Pandit Rajeev Taranath ji, a distinguished Sarod player and Guru of great repute. As one of the senior-most disciples of Maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan Sahib, Pandit Rajeev Taranath ji's guidance has further elevated Sougata's artistry and deepened his understanding of the intricacies of Indian classical music.
