Let's be honest, winters in southern Africa aren't tough. The sun shines all day every day, and it's a beautiful time of year. But they can get a little chilly, and nothing heralds the end of the cooler weather more clearly than the blossoming of the Cassia abbreviata, whose spectacular yellow flowers are seen all over the region as soon as winter is over. This legume is common and widespread, and has a host of traditional uses, both medicinal and ritual. To delve a little deeper into this tree, join Gus (the African Plant Hunter) on a trip in Gonarezhou National Park in south-eastern Zimbabwe.
Grateful thanks to Lin Barrie for the image of one of her artworks (Changana Man Dancing) https://wineandwilddogs.art/art/. Her art is also available for viewing at her studio in Harare ([email protected] for an appointment).
