Island Resort

The Manshausen Island Resort is located on a private island in the rugged rocky island region of northern Norway.

Main Lodge & Sauna

The Main Lodge is the resort's social hub used for communal meals, lounging, library, and a loft area serves as an expedition meeting room.

A waterside sauna offers guests the opportunity to take a cold ocean plunge after enjoying the hot sauna.

Cabin Rental

A short distance from the Main Lodge, the resort has four modern cabin rental designs perched near the edge of the water.

Three of the cabins hang out over the water to help fully engage guests in the beautiful ocean, sky, and mountain scenery. The fourth cabin sits on a rocky hillside with commanding views of the beautiful scenery.

Exterior Entry Deck

Each cabin rental has a private deck open to the sky, providing the perfect place to land after a long day of hiking or kayaking.  The deck also provides an intimate space to watch the northern lights and to stargaze at night.

Floor Plan

Off the entry deck, a large sliding wood pocket door opens to a vestibule for hanging and storing recreation gear.

A hallway, with a full bathroom on one side and kitchenette on the other, leads to a fantastic view of the water and sky.

Cozy Nest Over the Water

The cabin rental interior is finished in knotty pine wood.  Floor-to-ceiling insulated glass windows cover three sides of the main room, and two small side windows provide cross ventilation for fresh air.

Powerful Ocean & Sky

On clear calm days, the sky becomes the water, and the water becomes the sky.

At night the celestial northern lights bring the heavens alive with wisps of green and purple fluid formations, followed by a parade of the most brilliant stars.

Little Giant

The four modern cabin rental designs help bring resort guests closer to an ultimate communion with nature through their exquisite design and dramatic placement on the water's edge. Naturally weathered vertical wood planking on the exterior, along with the galvanized metal roofing, help these little structures blend with the landscape.  The cabin interiors, finished in knotty pine planking similar to vintage rustic cabins, along with the wrap-around floor to ceiling main room window, make these cabin rental designs truly Little Giants.

Information from Manshausen Island Resort

Manshausen Island is a remote hideaway owned by polar explorer, writer, and photographer Børge Ousland.

The 55-acre private island is situated high above the Arctic Circle in the Grøtøya strait, close to the small village of Nordskot. Access to the island is from the city of Bødo from where the Hurtibåten (speed boat ferry) sails to Nordskot daily, taking approximately 1.5 hours.

Manshausen's location offers a rich year-round environment for adventure enthusiasts and explorers. The award-winning cabin rental designs by Snore Stinessen offer spacious accommodations and stunning views over fjord and mountains.

The main house serves as the social hub featuring an open kitchen and dining room, lounge to relax, library, plus the expedition loft and conference room.

Fresh seafood is abundant with seasonal produce sourced from local fishermen, farmers, and organic producers whenever possible.

Manshausen is an adventure paradise. Offshore there's sea kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving in the protected local waters and island hopping is possible sailing on Børge's 31-foot trimaran 'Northern Passage.'

Fishing has always been important to Manshausen with migrating cod, Halibut, Mackerel, and Pollack being the most common species found in around the islands.

On land, there's climbing on red granite at Nordskot (vertical walls are typically 20-30 meters), rappelling, caving at Resshola (the 180 meters long Troll Cave), target shooting, hiking from Nordskot and on the islands of Måløya and Grøtøya.

From March through April, alpine skiing is possible in the mountains surrounding Steigen (700-1000 meters) including ship-to-shore access for more remote island summits.
