Running a YouTube channel is incredibly time-consuming and I do not profit from it due to copyright reasons. If you would like to support my projects, please consider donating to my Patreon: / swinginpig . Occasionally, I will upload rare tracks exclusively for Patreon subscribers.
After a long, long hiatus, I'm back... for now. Please read my most recent community post regarding my upcoming plans for this channel and the reason why I am now asking for patrons.
In the future, I will be posting fewer Dylan videos and more material pertaining to the folk revival movement. I recently befriended a wonderful 90-year-old folksinger named Ellen Stekert, who was one of Dylan's inspirations. She has a vast archive of recorded material, which she has given me permission to release eventually. These include uncirculated recordings of Dave Van Ronk, Rosalie Sorrels, Malvina Reynolds, and many more. Stay tuned.
As my comeback video, I decided to "mix up the medicine" and create a deconstructed version of Dylan's most famous song. I managed to locate the separated stems of the original master, which were released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 Collector's Edition (limited to 5000 copies and now prohibitively expensive). AI was also used to separate and refine the stems further. I will be creating a few more videos chronicling the experimentation and collaboration that resulted in "Like A Rolling Stone". This will include all the separated tracks, so other folks can try remixing it themselves; it's a wonderful opportunity to learn about the anatomy of one of the best songs of all time.
Even though "Like A Rolling Stone" is a phenomenal composition, I don't think the production itself is discussed enough. Dylan's rock albums of the mid-1960s were some of the slickest, most sonically fine-tuned recordings of the era. This is mostly thanks to producer Tom Wilson, the sound wizard who is credited with launching the careers of Simon & Garfunkel, Frank Zappa, The Velvet Underground, and others. In my opinion, without Wilson's production talent, Dylan's groundbreaking transition to rock music wouldn't have been as successful and lucrative.
This remix is meant to be a study of the production techniques and instrumentation that created that wild folk-rock sound. The musicians are firing on all cylinders. Remove a single instrument from this mix, and there is a significant diminishment. When all the instruments come together, this 6-minute epic becomes an unstoppable force that tops the charts and changes music history.
Below is a list of the personnel on the track, as per the research of Olof Björner:

Below are the timestamps of when the instruments come in:
