A rare and magnificent Arabian Caracal has been spotted in the UAE, offering a ray of hope for wildlife conservation. 🌿
The elusive wild cat, also called the “barking cat” for the unique sounds it makes, was captured in motion-sensor cameras at Wadi Wurayah National Park, the UAE’s first mountain protected area. Fewer than 250 mature Arabian Caracals survive globally, making this sighting a critical milestone for scientists and conservationists.
Key Facts:
Native to the Arabian Peninsula, apex predator crucial for mountain ecosystem balance
Rediscovered previously at Jebel Hafeet (2019) and Wadi Shees (2023)
Recognisable by its striking black ear tufts and powerful build
Historically significant in ancient Egyptian culture, often depicted guarding pharaohs’ tombs
Dr. Andrew Gardner, Emirates Nature-WWF, said:
“The rediscovery of the Arabian Caracal offers a rare second chance. Protecting this wild cat is a priority — it plays a vital role in ecosystems and has potential as a flagship for eco-tourism.”
Conservation Highlights:
Motion-sensor cameras triggered by movement captured rare photos at night
Highlights the importance of protected areas in preserving threatened species
The finding informs targeted conservation strategies to prevent extinction
This rediscovery, alongside other sightings like the Blanford’s Fox and Greater Spotted Eagle, demonstrates the value of UAE’s protected areas and citizen science programmes in safeguarding endangered wildlife.
