Game Genie: The Video Game Game-Changer and the Epic Legal Battle With Nintendo That Shaped It

The Game Genie changed the course of gaming: It helped to create the modern mod system, allowed players to play video games without the usual rules, and helped dedicated fans go further in games than ever before. It did so by allowing players to enter discovered codes that allowed them to change the nature of the game.

Some companies – like Sega – went along with the Genie. Others, like Nintendo, tried to fight it – and lost – costing themselves more than $15 million dollars.

This is the story of how Codemasters made the Game Genie, partnered with Galoob, and took down the video game giant – changing gaming while they did so.
