When I was a little boy, years before becoming a teenager and getting into rock music, I started playing with my mom's 60s vinyl collection. She had LPs and 45s from James Brown, Elvis, Nina Simone and The Beatles, among many others. I didn't know who these people on the covers were or their cultural significance but I kept playing "Sgt. Peppers" and "Rubber Soul" by these four British lads called The Beatles.
Now, five decades later, I just recorded a version of "Michelle", which was my mom's favorite Beatles song and the last song we listened together the last day we spent together in June.
