Often leaders believe that they have all the answers.
This certainly isn’t true when it comes to diversity and inclusion. One of the key components of getting it right, is ensuring that an organisational strategy to embed inclusion is supported by the lived experience of those who understand how discrimination plays out in the workplace.
One of the most important things to remember is that a strategy cannot be successful unless it takes into account the views and opinions of those it is meant to support.
In many cases this is not leadership. Leadership tends to be homogeneous and may not understand they ways in which racial discrimination impacts on individuals and communities.
It’s ALWAYS best to take into account the knowledge of those who suffer from these types of discrimination to ensure that the organization is building a strategy that is fit for, and built for purpose.
That’s the only way leadership can truly embed inclusion without being performative or designing a solution that does not deliver on the requirements for inclusive and equitable workplaces.
