The Ades Collection of Ceramics and Its Provenance
Dr Fuchsia Hart
24 July 2025
This lecture explores the provenance of a group of 12th/13th-century ceramics published by Iranian curator Mehdi Bahrami in Gurgan Faiences (1949). Dr Fuchsia Hart focuses on the Ades Collection—now partly held by the V&A—and the key role of Cairo-based dealer Jacques Matossian in shaping its history. Drawing on archival research, she traces the journey of these objects from Iran to England via Egypt, and examines their place in the mid-20th-century art market.
Dr Fuchsia Hart is the Sarikhani Curator for the Iranian Collection at the V&A. She holds a PhD from the University of Oxford, where her research focused on shrine patronage in Qajar Iran. She has previously held roles at the Bodleian Library, the University of Warwick, and Turquoise Mountain in Kabul.
