In 1991, Ernest Scared Stupid hit theaters as another goofy adventure for Jim Varney’s Ernest P. Worrell. But for an entire generation of kids, it became something else entirely — their first brush with real horror. With grotesque trolls and surprisingly dark moments, this PG-rated comedy accidentally doubled as a nightmare factory for countless generations.
In this retrospective, we’ll revisit how Ernest Scared Stupid came together, why it scared so many children, and whether it deserves to be remembered as a true “gateway horror movie.”
