Xochicuicatl cuecuechtli

Esta es una de las representaciones escénicas más antiguas que se conocen en la literatura
indígena de México, y, a la vez, una de las mayores innovaciones en el teatro musical de la
posmodernidad (según Rivas Iturralde, 2020: 75–78). El texto íntegro, en lengua náhuatl, procede
de una época anterior a la conquista europea de América, y fue registrado en los Cantares
mexicanos, en el siglo XVI, por los informantes de fray Bernardino de Sahagún. No se trata de una
ópera, sino de un “cuicatl”, importante antecedente de la ópera que se inventaría más tarde en
Florencia, en el año 1600, con ingredientes culturales muy distintos.
En su artículo “El Cuecuechcuicatl: Canto travieso de los aztecas” (1991), Patrick Johansson hace
un análisis del concepto cuicatl, el cual determina la estructura fundamental de la partitura que
resulta para este caso: “el vocablo cuicatl cubría entre los aztecas una síntesis trinitaria que
integraba el verbo, la danza y la música en una totalidad expresiva y no desprendía de ningún
modo el texto de su conjunto músico/coreográfico”. Enseguida, Johansson realiza un minucioso
estudio semiótico de este cuecuechcuicatl (o sea, “cantar de travesuras”), sacando a la luz su
contenido “lúbrico” a partir de las observaciones comunicadas en este sentido por fray Diego
Durán (1537–1588), y desarrollándolas con una interpretación de los códices Borgia y Florentino.
En resumen: tres muchachas seducen a un joven aventurero que por un momento cree poseerlas;
luego de un trance de embriaguez y un momento de éxtasis, el joven bailarín descubre la soledad
y la muerte. El hilo conductor es apoyado por un “maestro cantor” (cuicamatini) que resulta ser
una encarnación de Xochipilli, el gran poder de las flores, el canto, el baile, la sexualidad y la
música, quien al final de la historia alecciona al muchacho, llamado Tohuenyo, en cierto modo, un
avatar de Tezcatlipoca.

This is one of the oldest scenic representations known in indigenous Mexican literature, and, at
the same time, one of the greatest innovations in postmodern musical theater (according to Rivas
Iturralde, 2020: 75–78). The entire text, in the Nahuatl language, comes from an era before the
European conquest of America, and was recorded in the Cantares mexicanos, in the 16th century,
by the informants of Fray Bernardino de Sahagún. It is not an “opera”, but a “cuicatl”, an
important precedent of the opera that would be invented later in Florence, in the year 1600, with
very different cultural components.
In his article “El Cuecuechcuicatl: Mischievous Song of the Aztecs” (1991), Patrick Johansson
analyzes the cuicatl concept, which determines the fundamental structure of the score that results
in this case: “among the Aztecs the word cuicatl covered a tripartite synthesis that integrated verb,
dance and music in an expressive totality that does not detach the text from its
musical/choreographic ensemble”. Then, Johansson carries out a meticulous semiotic study of this
cuecuechcuicatl (that is, the “ribald song” genre), bringing to light its “lubricious” content based on
the observations reported in this regard by fray Diego Durán (1537–1588), and developing them
with an interpretation of the Borgia and Florentine codices. In summary: three girls seduce a
young adventurer who for a moment believes he possesses them; after a drunken trance and a
moment of ecstasy, the youngster discovers loneliness and death. The common thread is
supported by a “singing master” (the cuicamatini) who turns out to be an incarnation of Xochipilli,
the great power of flowers, singing, dancing, sexuality and music, who at the end of the story
instructs the young man called Tohuenyo, in a way, an avatar of Tezcatlipoca.
