This video is for people that are doing research, an academic, and are thinking of doing a PhD / graduate studies. However, anyone can enjoy if they write or a creative for a living.
One of my followers asks “I have questions about depression associated with manuscript and thesis writing. I hate it and really depressed. Could you please help me this”
Absolutely, I can help.
First of all, all work is mundane to some extent. From my perspective, a large component of this is due to repetition. even if you were sampling the finest wines, and the best Goods in the world, this will eventually feel like work.
Second, you have to be implicitly motivated and if you don't see any value in these activities, you are unlikely going to put much effort into the activity. As well, you have to ask yourself if you are a person that is motivated in general in other areas of your life. People sometimes just have different dispositions.
That being said, I think there are three things that are going on when you ask about writing and depression.
There is something going on with your immediate relationships. Perhaps, you are fearing your academic supervisor or the feedback that they are providing. Consider having a conversation about how they are providing feedback.
You are expecting far too much of yourself on a daily basis. Every time that I feel depressed, I am comparing myself to others and their performance level, or feeling to give myself adequate rewards for obtaining goals. You need to lower your expectations.
You are not monitoring your progress in some operational way. Once you obtain a target for a day, you should stop your work, and enjoy life. You need to spend time having fun or playing ‘life’ activities.

David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. Topics include the sharing economy, altruism, investing in technology, starting a business, and bounded rationality. My favorite videos pertain to incentives, goal setting, and learning from failure to drive behaviors such as weight loss, stopping telemarketers, creating novel technologies, and creating new movements.
https://r3ciprocity.com: Peer proofreading and editing platform
A new platform where you can earn credits by editing other people's documents. Use these credits to have your own work edited. If you do a good enough job, you can convert these credits to money.
The goal of the platform is to get people to 'pay it forward' and help other people out by creating incentives for people to give back.
