Paint The Dunes of Point Pelee Provincial Park
Join me in this relaxed watercolor session as we paint the iconic dunes of Point Pelee Provincial Park. This tutorial focuses on capturing the delicate light and textures of the sand and the resilient dune grasses.
The Magic of the Dunes
Point Pelee’s dunes are more than just piles of sand; they are a fascinating example of a "partnership" between wind and nature:
1. The wind blows sand against the blades of the beach grass.
2. The grass acts as a natural windbreak, slowing the air down and causing the sand to drop and pile up.
3. This pile-up actually stimulates the grass to grow even more roots, stabilizing the new height and building the dune over time.
My Palette for this Painting:
• Blues: Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue
• Reds/Earths: Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Yellow Ochre
• Greens/Yellows: Sap Green, Cadmium Yellow
• Black
Important Preparation Note:
When tracing the sketch onto your watercolor paper, leave out the horizon line. We will add this in pencil after you trace the sketch onto your paper. To ensure perfect accuracy when drawing the horizon draw it parallel to the edge of the watercolor paper. Use ruler to draw it.
