After spending the day with a group of 10 year-olds on a Forest Ecology Hike, I am amazed at how healthy, active people struggle while walking through Nature.
Terrain changes everything.
A hike around a lake invites navigating trails with roots, slopes and different mediums to walk in in.
Put simply, they fell a lot.
Slipping and sliding on wet leaves, snow and slush.
Fun at first. Troubling, as they struggled.
Worrying as they simply lacked the experience, endurance, skill and development to navigate Nature.
Why? They live in a flat world. Concrete, hardwood floor, gymnasiums and playground fields has developed larger muscle groups.
Balance, stability and sure-footedness is not in their repertoire.
I try not to take it for granted, but I grew up in Nature. It shows.
Walking in Nature, over changes in terrain and elevation will develop the smaller muscle groups in the feet, ankles, knees, hips and core.
Go outside, now.
Every walk in Nature is an investment in the strength we need as we age.
Go outside, for your future self.
