Alcibiades, a charismatic and fickle genius, turned loyalty into currency. Trained by Pericles and Socrates, he persuaded Athens to invade Sicily; accused of impiety, he deserted and, in Sparta, taught them to occupy Decelea in order to strangle Athens. Involved in scandals, he went over to Persia and argued for keeping Athens and Sparta exhausted. He returned promising Persian support, won battles, but a single defeat was enough for a new exile. His career was a sequence of disposable loyalties: talent at the service of ambition, which prolonged the war and corroded trust in his own city.
