It has been a major center of South Indian civilization for over 2,000 years.

The city was ruled by the Pallavas, Cholas, Vijayanagara kings, and later the Nawabs and British.

Under the Pallava dynasty (4th–9th century CE), Kanchipuram became a flourishing center of art, architecture, and education.

It was a seat for religious scholars, including Adi Shankaracharya, who established the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham.
