I heard this location may be closing the end of January 2023, so I had to take my family to this Historic Building that @walgreens made their Flagship store in Chicago, Illinois. But let’s be honest, I went there to see the stained glass ceiling! 😂🤣
This Roman-Corinthian style looking building on the outside and Neoclassical design on the inside is on a corner in Wicker Park/Bucktown at 1601 North Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, Illinois 60647. It once was the Noel State Bank and was built in 1919 right before the depression. Many banks have come and gone in the last century, but Walgreens bought this historical bank in 2010 to be one of their trademark stores and spent 2 YEARS working with the Commission on Chicago Landmarks to restore it to its original beauty. The Walgreens store finally opened in 2012.
They even repurposed the Terra cotta pillars, outlines and 3D accents to the Star of David pattern in the ceilings and restored and reinforced the massive stained glass dome by removing it completely, getting repaired, then replaced that now sits on the ceiling that ties everything together.
The ceiling itself was the reason why I went and I’m glad I did. It’s giving me some motivation to get back into making stained glass patterns again. What do you think of this place? Have you ever been?
