Synagogues Rising and Rabbis For Ceasefire held this online event on March 21, Ta'anit Esther, to wrestle with this Purim's violent legacy before the festival arrives. Featuring Rabbi Aryeh Cohen, Rabbi Arielle Lekach-Rosenberg, and a representative from the Israeli human rights organization, Breaking The Silence.
It feels deeply incongruous to embrace the joy of Purim this year, in this time of time of massive devastation and suffering in Gaza and pain for our people.
To make matters worse, the Purim story’s culmination in a spree of Jewish mass violence has been heard as a call for real-world harassment and pogroms against Palestinians. What do we do with this holiday? How can we witness and subvert the violence it generates, and direct it to a more liberatory future?
