La Reggia di Monza è un edificio neoclassico commissionato all’architetto Giuseppe Piermarini dagli Asburgo nel ‘700. Progettata per essere armoniosamente integrata con il paesaggio circostante, fu terminata in soli 3 anni. L’Arciduca Ferdinando d’Asburgo, figlio dell’imperatrice Maria Teresa d’Austria, voleva organizzare una corte intorno a Milano come a Versailles in Francia. La villa ha circa 700 ambienti, è composta da tre corpi principali posti a formare una U, è imponente ed elegante ma anche estremamente essenziale. La decorazione degli interni sono opera dei più famosi artisti dell’Accademia di Brera, che la abbellirono con stucchi, dipinti, affreschi e mobili.
La villa fu la residenza di campagna della corte asburgica fino al 1796, quando in Italia arrivarono le truppe napoleoniche; dal 1805 divenne la residenza del figliastro di Napoleone fino alla sua caduta. Tornata di proprietà degli austriaci fu scelta come residenza dall’ultimo rappresentante degli Asburgo, Massimiliano I, che la restaurò.
Con l’annessione del Lombardo-Veneto al Piemonte, la Villa Reale di Monza passò ai suoi ultimi proprietari, i Savoia. Re Umberto I ne fece la sua privilegiata sede di villeggiatura.
Nel 1934 la Reggia fu donata ai Comuni di Monza e Milano.
Dopo un lungo periodo di abbandono la villa è stata aperta al pubblico.
Un parco di 700 ettari la circonda: un vero e proprio scrigno di specie vegetali ed animali, con numerose cascine, ville e mulini. A questo gioiello verde si aggiungono i Giardini Reali (40 ettari), dove è possibile ammirare alberi secolari, grotte, specchi d’acqua, cascate e un bellissimo tempio dorico che si specchia nelle acque del lago.

The Royal Palace of Monza is a neoclassical building commissioned to the architect Giuseppe Piermarini by the Habsburgs in the 1700s. Designed to be harmoniously integrated with the surrounding landscape, it was finished in just 3 years. Archduke Ferdinand of Habsburg, son of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, wanted to organize a court around Milan as well as Versailles in France. The villa has about 700 rooms, is composed of three main bodies placed to form a U, it is impressive and elegant but also extremely essential. The interior decoration is the work of the most famous artists of the Brera Academy, who embellished it with stuccos, paintings, frescoes and furniture.
The villa was the country residence of the Habsburg court until 1796, when the Napoleonic troops arrived in Italy; from 1805 it became the residence of Napoleon's stepson until his fall. Back in the ownership of the Austrians, it was chosen as a residence by the last representative of the Habsburgs, Maximilian I, who restored it.
With the annexation of Lombardy-Veneto to Piedmont, the Royal Villa of Monza passed to its last owners, the Savoy family. King Umberto I made it his privileged holiday home.
In 1934 the Royal Palace was donated to the Municipalities of Monza and Milan.
After a long period of neglect, the villa was opened to the public.
A 700-hectare park surrounds it: a veritable treasure trove of plant and animal species, with numerous farmhouses, villas and mills. To this green jewel are added the Royal Gardens (40 hectares), where you can admire centuries-old trees, caves, ponds, waterfalls and a beautiful Doric temple that is reflected in the waters of the lake.
